A Psychological / Spiritual Approach To Cancer
by Ron Kennedy, M.D., Santa Rosa, California

If you have cancer, it is time to prepare — prepare to die, and prepare to live. It is a transforming experience to prepare to die. Few people ever have that opportunity. It is radically transforming to prepare to live. That is practically unheard of — almost no one ever prepares to live. It is important that you make out your will and make your peace with life and the people who love you. It is equally important that you prepare for a long life because, unless you simply want to die from this cancer, you may yet live a longer life.

If you have cancer, there are possibilities of which you may be unaware. It is important that you know that and that you not lose hope, unless, of course, you simply want to die. This does not mean that you will have a cure, it simply means that there is no type of cancer which has not been cured many times. Let me repeat: there is no type of cancer which has not been cured many times.

The Positive Value of Your Cancer

If you want to live, it is important that you take heart, have hope, and beyond that, a certain attitude toward your cancer. It is important that you see the value of the cancer in your life. If you are unwilling to see the value it has for you, you probably will fight it vainly and give up in a condition of lost hope.

Perhaps your cancer has made you glad for the life that you have; perhaps every moment seems precious, whereas before life did not seem to have a particular value and each moment was like all the others. Perhaps the cancer has revealed, or may yet reveal, the true nature of your relationship with loved ones. Perhaps through confronting death you can see the purpose for your living. Many people report coming face to face with God's love during their struggle with cancer.

Above all, you must give up the attitude of feeling sorry for yourself. Pity instead the poor bloke who dies never having awakened to the value of life, to the preciousness of each moment, to the absolute beauty of love, to the purpose for living. Count yourself as lucky for having the opportunity to wake up to life, and in that spirit of gratitude, get on with the business of learning about what cancer is and how you can become one of the survivors of cancer.

There is ample reason for you to have this healthy attitude. The world is full of people who have been cured from the same type of cancer you have, whatever it is. Adopting this healthy attitude makes you a healthier person. There are even a few people around who cured themselves through the use of mind-body techniques alone. I believe your attitude makes a everything possible, probably by strengthening your immune system, as the scientific literature suggests.

Your approach to your cancer will be determined by your personality. You may be that person who rigidly believes in authority. In that case, you go to your doctor and do whatever that person tells you to do. You may be that person with a good intellect and a natural curiosity, gifted with the ability to think for yourself. If this is so, you will want to know everything about cancer, so that you can think critically about the treatment of your cancer.

Whatever your personality, if you are going to have a successful relationship with your cancer, you must have the experience of responsibility for treatment of your cancer and responsibility for your destiny. In this context, your doctor becomes your partner in the project of making your body well.

Take charge of your situation

If you find yourself in bad shape mentally and emotionally, an act of responsibility is to place yourself in that condition from whence you are able to recover. If you need psychotherapy, find a good therapist. If you need to discover and express negative emotions, do that. If you need to make amends with people in your life, do so. If you need to acknowledge people who have loved you, do so without delay.

An Open Mind

The most important attitude for you to have is that of an open mind. If your doctor tells you that you can be cured with his treatment, that there is no room for doubt of that and when he can back up his talk with proof, then you may close your mind to all else. Until then, having a closed mind is definitely dangerous to your health. There may be more things in heaven and earth than are contained in your philosophy, but a closed mind makes them impossible for you.

I do not want to make your decisions for you. I do want to inform you of what is available for the treatment of your cancer. I want to tell you what a mainstream doctor practicing standardized medicine will not tell you — for lack of knowing or for fear of condemnation by his peers.

A lot of this information you can put into effect yourself without consulting a doctor. If you do choose to consult a doctor, you will be armed with information and able to converse intelligently. This information may make it possible to make your choice of a doctor wisely, based on the quality of that doctor's approach to cancer and not just because you know him or her, or he/she has a "reputation," or she/he wears the $2000 suit and belongs to the country club. The object is to become a cancer survivor, not be impressed by your doctor. There are plenty of impressed former cancer patients in the local cemetery.

It is important for you to be in charge of your treatment. Your best chance of surviving lies in becoming an equal partner with your doctor. For this, you need knowledge. You need the full story about the approaches to cancer treatment. This introduction to the various treatment approaches will get you started. In reading this introduction, you may find that you want to know more about one or more approaches. For this purpose I have listed, at the end of the discussion of each discipline, the sources to whom you may write or call for more information. At the end of this section I have prepared for you a sheet of addresses, which you may simply cut into mailing labels. Write a letter of inquiry to the places from which you want further information.

Sadly, the treatments for cancer acceptable to the U. S. medical establishment are: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Other forms of treatment, if given specifically for cancer, can, in many states, result in the loss of one's medical license. If a doctor loses his or her license, it becomes much more difficult to help people. Therefore, the competition to standardized cancer care, as offered by the medical monopoly, has been almost eliminated by this threat. The sad fact is that to treat cancer as I would like to treat cancer, I would have to move to another country — Mexico, for example. Many good doctors have done exactly that.

Many progressive medicine doctors do treat cancer patients for such things as bolstering their immune systems; however, we cannot tell them that this is for the purpose of treating cancer itself. If you go to one of those doctors, you may be asked to sign a waiver recognizing this fact. Please understand that the doctor will help you, but that his or her hands are tied in what can be said to you. Because the medical establishment in the state of California has succeeded in persuading the state legislature to outlaw cancer treatments which do not fall into the pigeonholes of surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, you must understand that any other treatment is not for your cancer.

As far as I know, an absolute cure for cancer has not been discovered. What I mean is that a single cure, which works on every cancer, every time, has not been discovered. I may be wrong, and the cure or cures may be known but suppressed as many people claim. What we can say and be certain about is that an absolute cure for cancer has not been discovered and universally agreed upon.

However, if ever there is such a discovery, unless it is made by the mainstream medical establishment, and unless it yields a huge profit in which a large portion of the cancer industry and the cancer establishment can share, the arrival of this discovery will not be greeted with open arms by those who are making a fortune on ineffective cancer treatments at present.

Realizing this state of affairs — the reality of the perversion of medical truth by the profit motive, which is inherent in capitalism — I find it easy to believe that one, or several, or many cancer cures may already have been discovered and then discredited and suppressed by the cancer industry.

The argument a mainstream medical doctor would make to this is, "Yea, but all you have to do is perform the necessary double-blind, placebo controlled studies, prove the statistical validity of the findings and publish in a 'respected, peer-reviewed journal.' " The problem with this argument is twofold.

First, if a cure for cancer is discovered, is it ethical to withhold it from half of the people in a large study — to simply allow them to die to prove a point? This is exactly what a "double-blind placebo controlled study" does. Second, if one looks at the financial contributors to, and the advertisers in, these so-called "respected" medical journals, one finds a list of the major moneymakers in the medical industry. Without these advertising dollars, "respected peer-reviewed medical journals" would go broke almost immediately. These businesses have no interest in funding the publication of reports which undermine their profits.

The fact is, that the major medical journals have been bought by vested interests who pressure the publishers to consider not publishing such things as studies showing the efficacy of EDTA, hydrogen peroxide therapy, DMSO and progressive treatments for cancer. If you have performed a study in one of these areas, you will have your paper rejected by these "respected" journals, prima facie, simply because it is about a subject about which it is forbidden to publish.

If one has cancer, or if one is the relative or friend of a person who has cancer, these considerations are important to understand when selecting a treatment program. Most people who receive a diagnosis of cancer will go to the doctor they know best and receive from that doctor (or perhaps a doctor to which that doctor refers them) advice and treatment about how to handle that cancer. This is understandable, given a state of fear, alarm, panic and desperation to cling to some stable system of authority.

At this point, if one is intent on being free of cancer, rather than merely lining the pockets of the cancer industry before dying, it becomes important to inform oneself quickly. This is where it pays off to have developed an intellect, the capacity to think clearly and the intuitive ability to separate truth from hype, even if the hype is commonly accepted.

After the shock of the cancer diagnosis wears off, it is important to ask critical questions. Here are those questions:

Is there an absolute cure for my type of cancer?

If there is not an absolute cure for my type of cancer, what is the percentage of people who are cured of this cancer when it is at this stage?

What is a "cure?" Does this word mean free of this cancer forever, or does it merely mean survived for five years but still sick?

Can you give me a copy of the studies from which your answer is derived?

Will the therapy you recommend damage my body, perhaps my immune system?

If it is damaging to my immune system, and it does not cure my cancer, will this damage to my immune system make it less likely that subsequent progressive therapies will work?

Does this therapy make it more likely that I will develop another cancer later; i.e., is the therapy itself carcinogenic?

These are critically important questions not only to ask but to which one should insist on receiving thorough answers. If your doctor balks at supplying the answers, or is irritated that you asked these questions, the chances are good that he does not have the answers, that is to say, the doctor does not know!

This is an unimaginable circumstance to some people — the doctor does not know! We believe that doctors know everything, but the fact is that a large portion of medicine is practiced based on what the doctor's medical school professors believed.

It is important to know that doctors were educated in medical schools and that medical schools have been purchased for the most part, by "grants" from the medical industry and from the government, which exists in a "good old boy" network with the medical industry, wherein favors are granted as rewards for "correct" opinions. Medical school professors are like anyone else, they want to keep the money flowing, and they want to be in sync with their superiors — and their superiors want to be in sync with the source of money, which flows through the medical school structure, etc.

Of course, this is all made easy to swallow by massive propaganda blitzes from the pharmaceutical, surgical and medical supply industries and their representatives who come to the medical school, get to know the professors, the doctors and even the medical students (future customers) on a personal basis. They come armed with copies of studies showing the superiority of their products and with glossy brochures in hand, all free, of course, as are the samples of drugs and other medical products. These representatives of the branches of the medical industry also are equipped with obsequious attitudes, which are designed to please whoever they come into contact with and never to make any waves or create any upset or controversy. I remember them well.

It is very important that you understand this structure of mind control, for unless you understand it, you cannot grasp how an industry is able to hypnotize otherwise perfectly intelligent professors, doctors and medical students who are dedicated, in their hearts, to helping people.

So, while the answers to the pointed questions you ask your doctor about your cancer certainly come from what your doctor honestly believes is best for you, you must understand that, despite what your doctor believes, he may simply not know his subject in depth — and specifically he may not know much about the approaches to treating cancer which are "progressive," except to say, as many doctors say about EDTA, "Well, I don't know much about that except that it is no good!" Or, "If that were any good, I would have learned about it in medical school." This type of statement from your doctor separates the thinking patients from the nonthinking patients.

Some people who think for themselves will survive their "incurable cancer," while almost all of those who blindly follow the blind will die from their cancer. One thing is for certain, if your doctor says your cancer is incurable — and you intend to be cured — then any statements from the doctor after that (such as "Why don't we use this or that treatment" or "Come to see me in two months") should absolutely be ignored. The diagnosis of "incurable" already has alerted you to the limitations of your doctor's knowledge.

As one reads case histories, one comes to realize that there is no type of cancer which has not, at one time or another, been cured! Your cancer may not be cured, but that does not mean your disease is "incurable." Do not let anyone sell you that point of view unless you want to die sooner, rather than later.
