Detoxification is an ongoing process that takes place continuously within the liver, kidneys, intestines, lymph, blood, and in every cell. The primary pathway of the elimination of this waste is through the liver, where we transform the waste into bile. Bile contains the vast majority of the body's metabolic waste, deceased blood cells, and toxins that the liver has filtered out from the system. Once formed, bile moves from the liver to the gallbladder and is then secreted into the intestines where it is used to break down fats and lubricate bowel movements before it is eliminated. Bile is the primary agent for giving our bowel movements it's classic dark brown color and imbalances can often be detected by the presence of green or straw colored fecal matter. Bile is a natural laxative, has a normalizing effect on the intestines, and any increase in its production and secretion leads to an increase in our body's ability to cleanse out toxins and waste.
PROTECTING THE LIVER DURING DETOX:
SYMPTOMS OF DETOX AND DETOXIFICATION:
WATCHING THE DETOXIFICATION ELIMINATION PATHWAYS:
First, let me just say that if you have liver problems because of alcohol consumption, that it IS possible to change your behaviour. We all know alcohol is bad for us. Why do we not do it then? Procastination? Lazyness? Mental barriers? I was first introduced to methods of breaking through procrastination by the popular motivational speaker Tony Robbins. Tony Robbins has helped me make marked improvements in not only my health but other aspects of my life as well. I highly recommend his life-changing programs.
But many things other than alcohol can cause liver and gallbladder problems. Every year, more than half a million people in the United States and more than 50,000 people in Canada undergo surgery to remove their gallbladders because of gallstones.
90% of people have gallstones
Symptoms of liver disease include nausea, malaise, vomiting, fatigue, loss of appetite, itching, yellow coloring of skin or eyes, right upper quadrant pain, "flu like" symptoms and dark urine. etc. The best way to determine whether your liver has been compromised in with some simple blood tests.
One of the best tools you can use to prevent gallstones is a liver cleansing procedure you can perform in the comfort of your home and which is very inexpensive: the Liver Flush.
There are two stages of liver detoxification:
Phase I is carried out by the cytochrome P 450 enzyme system and consists of oxidation and reduction reactions. Various nutrients are required in order for the Phase I detoxification system to be carried out efficiently. Cytochrome P450 reactions generate free radicals and this can cause secondary damage to cells. An adequate supply of key antioxidants is therefore essential to prevent tissue damage. Reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase and additional nutrients such as beta carotene, vitamin E, selenium and N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) will act as antioxidants.
Other nutrient co-factors required for cytochrome P450 reactions include riboflavin, niacin, magnesium, iron and certain phytonutrients such as indoles from cruciferous vegetables and quercetin have been shown to support Phase I of liver detoxification.
The metabolites from this detoxification process are often potentially more harmful than their original toxic compounds and it is important for health that these toxic compounds not be allowed to build up. This is where Phase II of liver detoxification comes in.
In Phase II of liver detoxification, glutathione conjugation is the primary pathway for these intermediate metabolites. Increased exposure to toxins as well as a poor dietary supply of glutathione can soon lead to glutathione depletion and increased damage from these highly reactive intermediates. Oral supplementation with reduced glutathione or N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) may help to increase glutathione levels in the body.
Glucuronidation pathways in Phase II can be reversed by Beta glucuronidase enzymes produced by pathological bacteria and cause toxins to be reabsorbed increasing toxicity. Studies have shown that calcium d-glucurate, a natural ingredient found in certain vegetables and fruits can inhibit beta glucuronidase activity resulting in increased elimination of toxins. Supplements of calcium d-glucurate may also be taken to enhance the glucuronidation pathway.
Other nutrients which play vital roles in the Phase II liver detoxification pathway include amino acids glycine, cysteine, glutamine, methionine, taurine, glutamic acid and aspartic acid.
Glutamine plays a chief role in ammonia detoxification as well as helping to maintain the integrity of the mucus of the gastrointestinal tract.
In some people the detoxification pathways (Phases I and II) are out of balance. For example, if Phase I is more active than Phase II, a build up of reactive intermediate metabolites can occur which in turn can lead to tissue damage and disease. These people are referred to as "Pathological Detoxifiers".
Pathological detoxifiers can be identified as those individuals who are highly sensitive to fumes e.g. paints and perfumes, react adversely to various pharmaceutical drugs and may have a reaction to drinking caffeine.
There is now an extensive body of evidence indicating that diet plays a crucial role in modifying the body’s detoxification pathways. Even in allopathic medicine grapefruit juice is utilised for transplant patients as grapefruit contains naringenin, a substance which slows down Phase I enzyme activity.
This enables such drugs as cyclosporin – which is given to prevent organ rejection – to stay in the system for longer prior to the drug being detoxified. Pathological detoxifiers may also find it useful to include grapefruit juice in their diet.
Vitamins and minerals – particularly the B vitamins – play a major role, acting as co-factors for many enzyme systems including those of liver detoxification, therefore making sure you consume enough of the B complex group of vitamins is of prime importance for optimum detoxification. Including plenty of whole grains which contain B vitamins in the diet as well as taking a good B complex supplement will aid the liver in this crucial role.
Depletion of vitamin C may also impair the detoxification process; vitamin C also prevents free radical formation. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables. However, in order to obtain optimum amounts supplementation is required. I recommend at least a few grams a day.
Vitamin E and selenium are co-factors for glutathione peroxidase activity as well as being powerful antioxidants. (Vitamin E also works synergistically with vitamin C.) Today, our diets are very low in selenium due to the depletion of the soil of this vital mineral. Supplementation is therefore important.
Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and cabbage in the diet have been shown to enhance Phase I activities. I use those when vegetable juicing on a frequent basis.
Zinc is another essential nutrient and acts as a co-factor for many enzyme systems. Zinc deficiency can cause a whole range of consequences. One important role that zinc plays is in the functioning of an enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase involved in the conversion of alcohols to aldehydes in Phase I detoxification. Therefore anyone who drinks alcohol should ensure they have optimum amounts of zinc in their diet.

Additional Methods Of Achieving Liver Detoxification
And let's not forget the all-important Liver Flush.
by Marc Leduc
Traditional home remedy
My sister Christine tried it first. "Fifty stones", she reported, "I passed fifty gallstones!". I was as surprised as she was, because Christine is in her early twenties and does not have typical gallstone symptoms such as pain under her right ribcage, right shoulder pain, nausea, fatty food intolerance, constipation and gas.
Now I had to find out for myself.
The procedure was quite simple: I drink two glasses of organic apple juice every two hours for two days, eating only fruits and vegetables. At the end of the two days, I have one to two tablespoons of Epsom salts dissolved in water, followed by half a cup of olive oil with lemon juice at bedtime.
There is science behind the liver flush. Apple juice is high in malic acid, which acts as a solvent to weaken adhesions between solid globules. Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) relax smooth muscle and will relax and dilate the bile duct to enable larger solid particles to pass through. Unrefined olive oil stimulates the gallbladder and bile duct to contract and expel its contents.
I drank the apple juice for two days, diligently maintaining the two hour schedule. The olive oil was much more difficult. I hesitated for about fifteen minutes before pinching my nose and gulping it down, the way I used to when my mother made me drink tomato juice. The sensation of such a large amount of pure oil in my mouth was so unpleasant, I nearly vomited. I thought that turning off the lights and lying down would make me feel better, but it only took away all distraction and forced me to focus on my nausea. Somehow, though, I managed to fall asleep.
When I woke up the next morning, I had cramps in my abdomen, but I didn't have the urge to go to the bathroom. So I waited. And waited. Then suddenly I felt pressure building quickly in my intestines. The event was nothing short of explosive and peering into the toilet, satisfying. About 70 dark green balls, ranging in size from 1 mm to 1 cm were floating on the water. I picked one up and rinsed it off. It was gelatinous and felt soft and squishy.
But still I wondered how I could have had so many gallstones at my age and health. Their soft, translucent and gelatinous consistency also made question whether they were actually cholesterol stones.
I decided to do some research. The first thing I learned was that some people believe the gelatinous green balls are probably not gallstones. Several sources, including the naturopathic doctors Michael Murray and Joseph Pizzorno, said that "gallstones" typically passed during the liver flush are not really gallstones but simply soft complexes of mineral, olive oil and lemon juice produced within the digestive tract.
The liver flush is also theoretically unsafe for people who have gallstones. The large amount of oil causes the gallbladder to contract, making it possible for a gallstone to become lodged in the narrow opening of the gallbladder and necessitate emergency gallbladder surgery. Since gallstones are common in North America and many people with gallstones are asymptomatic, the absence of gallbladder-related symptoms does not mean an absence of risk. This procedure should only be done under the supervision of a trained health practitioner.
The Liver Flush
The material you are about to read is quoted from Dr. Hulda's book, " The Cure for All Diseases ".
Excerpt from the book:
Cleansing the liver of gallstones dramatically improves digestion, which is the basis of your whole health. You can expect your allergies to disappear, too, more with each cleanse you do. Incredibly, it also eliminates shoulder, upper arm, and upper back pain. You have more energy and increased sense of well being.
For many persons, including children, the biliary tubing is choked with gallstones. Some develop allergies or hives but some have no symptoms. When the gallbladder is scanned or X-rayed nothing is seen. Typically, they are not in the gallbladder. Not only that, most are too small and not calcified, a prerequisite for visibility on an X-ray. There are over half a dozen varieties of gallstones, most of which have cholesterol crystals in them. They can be black, red, white, green or tan colored. The green ones get their color from being coated with bile. Notice in the picture (pg. 545) how many have imbedded unidentified objects. Are they fluke remains? Notice how man are shaped like corks with longitudinal grooves below the tops. We can visualize the blocked bile ducts from such shapes. Other stones are composites- made of many smaller ones- showing that they regrouped in the bile ducts some time after the last cleanse.
At the very center of each stone is found a clump of bacteria, according to scientists, suggesting a dead bit of parasite might have started the stone forming.
As the stones grow and become more numerous the back pressure on the liver causes it to make less bile. Imagine the situation if your garden hose had marbles in it. Much less water would flow, which in turn would decrease the ability of the hose to squirt out the marbles. With gallstones, much less cholesterol leaves the body, and cholesterol levels rise.
Gallstones, being porous, can pick up all the bacteria, cysts, viruses and parasites that are passing through the liver. In this way "nests" of infection are formed, forever supplying the body with fresh bacteria. No stomach infection such as ulcers or intestinal bloating can be cured permanently without removing these gallstones from the liver.
Cleanse you liver twice a year
You can't clean a liver with living parasites in it. You won't get out many stones. Zap daily the week before, or get through the first three weeks of the parasite killing program before attempting a liver cleanse. If you are on a parasite maintenance program, do a high dose program the week before.
Completing the kidney cleanse before cleansing the liver is also recommended. You want your kidneys, bladder and urinary tract in top working condition so they can efficiently remove any undesirable substances incidentally absorbed from the intestine as the bile is being excreted.
Do any dental work first, if possible. Your mouth should be metal free and bacteria free (cavitations are cleaned). A toxic mouth can put a heavy load on the liver, burdening it immediately after cleansing. Eliminate that problem first for best results.

[Note inserted by webmaster:
You can substitute the 3 cups of water (=750 dl) (used in this recipe to dissolve the Epsom salt) with 3 cups freshly pressed grapefruit juice, or freshly pressed apple juice. That way you will not feel the unpleasant taste of the Epsom salt.
I also recommend using grapefruit juice over lemon juice. The lemon juice sometimes doesn't mix with the oil as well as grapefruit juice.]
Take no medicines, vitamins or pills that you can do without; they could prevent success. Stop the parasite program and kidney herbs too, the day before.
Eat a no-fat breakfast and lunch such as cooked cereal with fruit, fruit juice (no butter or milk), baked potato or other vegetables with salt only. This allows the bile to build up and develop pressure in the liver. Higher pressure pushes out more stones.
Do not eat or drink after 2 o'clock. If you break this rule you could feel quite ill later.
Get your Epsom salts ready. Mix 4 tbs. in 3 cups water and pour this into a jar.
[ You can substitute the 3 cups of water with 3 cups freshly pressed grapefruit juice, or freshly pressed apple juice .]
This makes four servings, 3/4 cup each. Set the jar in the refrigerator to get ice cold (this is for convenience and taste only).
Drink one serving (3/4 cup) of the ice cold Epsom salts. If you did not prepare this ahead of time, do it right now. You may also add 1/8 tsp. vitamin C powdered to improve the taste. You may also drink a few mouthfuls of water afterwards or rinse your mouth. Get the olive oil and grapefruit out to warm up.
Repeat by drinking another 3/4 cup of Epsom salts. You haven't eaten since two o'clock, but you won't feel hungry. Get your bedtime chores done. The timing is critical for success; don't be more than 10 minutes early or late.
Pour 1/2 cup (measured) olive oil into the pint jar. Squeeze the grapefruit by hand into the measuring cup. Remove pulp with fork. You should have at least 1/2 cup, more (up to 3/4 cup) is best. You may top it up with lemonade. Add this to the olive oil. Close the jar tightly with the lid and shake hard until watery (only fresh grapefruit does this).
Now visit the bathroom one or more times, even it makes you late for your ten o'clock drink. Don't be more than 15 minutes late.
Drink the potion you have mixed. Take 4 ornithine capsules with the first sips to make sure you will sleep through the night. Take 8 if you already suffer from insomnia. Take it to your bedside if you want, but drink it standing up. Get it down within 5 minutes (fifteen minutes for very elderly or weak persons).
Notes from the webmaster:
Although I generally recommend against drinking soda, I make an exception when doing the liver flush. Adding an amount of Classic Coke equal to the amount of olive oil to the recipe makes swallowing the mixture much easier.
Lie down immediately. You might fail to get stones out if you don't. The sooner you lie down the more stones you will get out. Be ready for bed ahead of time. Don't clean up the kitchen. As soon as the drink is down walk to your bed and lie down flat on your back with your head up high on the pillow. Try to think about what is happening in the liver. Try to keep perfectly still for at least 20 minutes. You may feel a train of stones traveling along the bile ducts like marbles. There is no pain because the bile duct valves are open (thank you Epsom salts!). Go to sleep. You may fail to get stones out if you don't.
Next morning. Upon awakening take your third dose of Epsom salts. If you have indigestion or nausea wait unit it is gone before drinking the Epsom salts. You may go back to bed. Don't take this potion before 6:00 AM.
2 hours later.
Take your fourth (the last) dose of Epsom salts. Drink 3/4 cups of the mixture. You may go back to bed.
After 2 more hours you may eat. Start with fresh fruit juice. Half an hour later eat fruit. One hour later you may eat regular food but keep it light. By supper you should feel recovered.
How well did you do?
Expect diarrhea in the morning. Use a flashlight to look for gallstones in the toilet with the bowel movement. Look for the green kind since this is proof that they are genuine gallstones, not food residue. Only bile from the liver is pea green. The bowel movement sinks but gallstones float because of the cholesterol inside. Count them all roughly, whether tan or green. You will need to total 2,000 stones before the liver is clean enough to rid you of allergies or bursitis or upper back pains permanently. The first cleanse may rid you of them for a few days, but as the stones from the rear travel forward, they give you the same symptoms again. You may repeat cleanses at two week intervals. Never cleanse when you are ill.
Sometimes, the bile ducts are full of cholesterol crystals that did not form into round stones. They appear as a "chaff" floating on top of the toilet bowl water. It may be tan colored, harboring millions of tiny white crystals. cleansing this chaff is just as important as purging the stones.
How safe is the liver cleanse? It is very safe. My opinion is based on over 500 cases, including many persons in their seventies and eighties. None went to the hospital; none even reported pain. However it can make you feel quite ill for one or two days afterwards, although in every one of these cases the maintenance parasite program had been neglected. This is why the instructions direct you to complete the parasite and kidney rinse program first.
